International students learn cueca with Usach Without Borders and Department of Cultures and Arts
In an activity coordinated by the members of the Usach Without Borders program, a group of international exchange students at our university learned one of Chile's traditional dances.
In the context of the national holidays in September, recently the student volunteers of the Usach Without Borders program prepared a day of learning and practicing cueca for the students who are doing their exchange at the Universidad de Santiago de Chile. The induction was in charge of Professor Luis Maldonado of the Department of Cultures and Arts.
The cueca, Chile's national dance, is a unique cultural experience that international students can enjoy during their exchange at our university. Far from being a simple dance, cueca represents an opportunity to immerse oneself in Chilean culture through its rhythm and joyful movements. Participating in cueca classes or events not only allows students to learn about local traditions, but also to share moments of fun and camaraderie with their Chilean classmates. This activity, in addition to being inclusive and participatory, helps to break down cultural and linguistic barriers, facilitating an enjoyable and enriching learning environment for all.
In a lively session, Professor Luis Maldonado guided the international students in learning the cueca, teaching them step by step the characteristic movements and turns. With patience and enthusiasm, the professor from the Department of Cultures and Arts explained the meaning of each gesture and how to follow the rhythm of the music, while the students, some a little shy at first, soon joined in with energy and laughter.
It is worth mentioning the work done by Usach Without Borders, a program of national student volunteers coordinated by the Department of International Relations, which is dedicated to accompanying and supporting international students during their stay at our university. This program plays a fundamental role in the process of integration and cultural adaptation, as it facilitates the exchange of experiences, knowledge and friendships among students from different countries.
Through activities such as cultural outings, sporting events, workshops and dance classes such as cueca, Usach Without Borders provides close and friendly support, helping international students feel welcome and part of the university community. Thanks to the dedication of these student volunteers, the exchange experience is enriched, generating meaningful connections that transcend borders and leave indelible marks on all participants.
