Rector Vidal to join the Governing Board of UNESCO's International Institute for Higher Education
The Rector of USACH was nominated by the plenary of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities and the Director General of UNESCO recently appointed him as a member of this international board.
“It is an honor to represent the communities of the CRUCH universities in this important international instance, promoting the formation of excellence with inclusion, at the service of the country and the construction of a more democratic, equitable and sustainable society,” said the rector of the Universidad de Santiago de Chile (USACH), Rodrigo Vidal, upon receiving the news of his appointment as a member of the Governing Council of the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC).

Vidal was proposed by the plenary of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH) in September 2023 and appointed last August 26 by the Director General of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), Audrey Azoulay. The rector will hold office until the closure of the 44th session of UNESCO's General Conference in 2027.

IESALC's Governing Council is the entity that oversees and adjusts the institute's work program, in accordance with the guidelines approved by UNESCO's General Conference every two years.

This Council is composed of nine members: six are government representatives elected at a meeting of delegations from the region at the UNESCO General Conference and three are appointed by the UNESCO General Directorate in consultation with the region's Councils of Rectors or their equivalents.

IESALC was created by UNESCO's General Conference in 1997, from the Regional Center for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (CRESALC), and is the only specialized institute of the United Nations system to contribute to the development and transformation of higher education in the Member States, fostering the production of knowledge and discussing public policies in this field.
